Teaformance, a theatre production company, was founded on the principles of combining the arts of teaching and performance. We use theatre as a vehicle to reach and uplift audiences from all walks of life, our community at large, especially our young generation, who are our future leaders, entrepreneurs and parents to the next generation. Through our vibrant theatre productions, we educate and present skills and values learned while being entertained.

Professional- and aspirant artists are uplifted and given the opportunity to showcase their talents and develop their skills in drama and education.

The creator, executive director, writer, producer and director of Teaformance spoke to the CHRONICLE about their theatrical antics and what they’re all about.

Tjom van Aswegen started Teaformance in 2014, because of his love of culture, drama and theatre and because he wanted to give actors a chance to do what they love, as there aren’t many opportunities for them otherwise.

"Teaformance comes from my love of teaching and performance, so I combined my love for both and there you have it,” he says.

“We give actors actual on-stage experience, where they can hone their skills – in-service training for aspiring actors."
Teaformance is currently performing fortnightly (every two weeks) at the Art Farm and does different types of shows, especially for kids, focusing on telling stories with moral themes and even interactive shows, where kids can be a part of the fun.

The launch at Art Farm took place on September 24, and featured a show with six characters, about a "distorted, dysfunctionally functional family", as Tjom puts it.

“I want theatre to be accessible to everyone; that is a big part of this for me, making it affordable.

“I want to keep this running, perhaps expand at some stage and, maybe, one day even become a profitable organisation,” says Tjom, looking to the future.
